Short story long, I plan to buy a new car in probably 6 to 8 months from now and these two are “realistically” on my list of cars to consider.

So, I called up my local Ford dealership today to see if they had any allocations available 2017 model year. The salesperson said they sold out the first day but he was willing to look on the system and see if anyone had an open allocation. He also mentioned that pretty much every one would have a mark up over MSRP. I can’t say I was surprised, that was what I expected.

On the other hand aone could contact the “official enthusiast forum’s dealership” and order an STI for close to, or below invoice price.

Sure the RS may be the better car, but is it still the better car if you can’t find anyone to sell you one? Or if you do find one is it 10 to 15 thousand dollars better?

Don’t pay over MSRP, don’t do it. You will be able to find one, you may need to ship it though.

ones a hatch and the other isn’t. I would go for the RS if I could. If I couldn’t I would go 2014 STi

Or, break in the car on a ROAD TRIP! Many great adventures happen on road trips.

The Subaru dealership I referenced is in Colorado Springs. My brother lives there so I am considering flying out there to hang with him for a few days and then drive back home to Monterey. It would be a really fun trip.

Not to mention some awesome mountain roads to give the suspension a full break-in. Family, fast cars, fun roads, sounds like a fantastic trip to me!

To be honest the hatch is a non issue for me as I already have an SUV for the other car. I saw the STI in person for the first time a few months ago and lusted after it. I like the looks and the big ass wing’ probably because I am still a 14 year old boy inside.

both are a lot of money for a depreciating asset. I vote 997 C4/C4S or R32 to both put a floor on depreciation and likely save you some cash in the process.

Would you happen to know any banks that would finance one of those?

Also a 997 is pushing 50k

You should test drive an STI, it might be a harsher ride than you’re looking for, I know my WRX was. Why not look at the new VW Golf R? Or the previous R. I got mine, a ‘13 model, in 2015 for $28k w/ 16,000miles on it.

Yeah I plan too. I don't know, but the harsh ride seems appealing to me... We have pretty good roads around here too thankfully. The Golf R is quite nice too. I will have to look into one.

For an R32? No. But for a 997, most local credit unions will finance if you have an account with them. My wife is still making payments on a 2005 Mercedes SL500 for some stupid reason.

Maybe I’m lucky living close to NorCal, but there are multiple 997 C4s (C4 not C4S, stupid plurality) in the $30-40k range within 200 miles of me. That said, the early 997s suffer from the same IMS bearing issue as the 996s. If you can swing it and deal with superficial ish like the headlights, the 996TT is a much better car - quite possibly the best value in a sports car you can currently find.

I live in Monterey, where are these sub 40k 997's you speak of? My Craigslist search only finds the occasional 996. I am not that worried about the IMS bearing issue because that can always be addressed.

Plus, the 996 turbo is 45k and up. That's quite a bit more than I would like to spend.

You bring up a good point though, a credit union car loan for a nice Porsche would be pretty sweet. I am not sure how happy the kids will be having to sit in the back of it on the way to and from school, but I am sure I would get over it.

Not vouching for any of these, but to prove they are out there:

The important thing about buying a used Porsche is to take your time to find the right one, as there are plenty out there in various shapes and prices.

As for cramming kids in the back seats, that will come down to the kid. When I was little, my dad was looking at a 928, and I tried to convince him that the back seats were plenty big for my sister and me. It didn’t work, but at least I tried. And FWIW, I’ve fit women comfortably in the back of my 996, but they were fairly petite.
